The East Sea is where the sun rises on the Korean Peninsula. Therefore, the East Sea and the sunrise have special a meaning to Koreans, and lots of people visit the East Coast to make a wish or celebrate special days. Especially, on New Year’s Day, thousands of people come and make wishes and watch the sunrise together. This presents a holier and more innocent ceremony than almost any other religious rite, and is quite touching.

In the summer, approximately 70% of the Korean people plan to spend their summer holidays at the coasts in Gangwon-do. The reason why the East Coast attracts such a remarkable number of people, even though Korea is surrounded by sea on 3 sides, is because of the fine sand, the clear and deep sea, and the fact that the waves are perfect for swimming. People, however, are accustomed to visiting the East Coast even in other seasons, to watch the changing seascape according to the season and to walk along the sandy beaches. Hotels and inns along the coast provide convenient lodging services, and live-fish markets along the coast provide fresh fish dishes. So, the coast is always filled with fresh and unique experiences to enjoy.

Mountains make up most of Gangwon-do and there are lots of famous mountains that attract tourists. Several national and provincial parks are scattered around the well-known mountains in the area. In fact, these take up almost the entire area of Gangwon-do.

Soraksan is the mid point of a huge mountain range starting from Baekdusan to Tomal(土末; village name meaning ‘the end of the land’). This beautiful mountain is a favorite among Koreans and even foreigners pay it profuse compliments. Odaesan is the representative “feminine” mountain, and Chiaksan is famous as a rough and steep “manly” mountain. Also, Taebaeksan is a special mountain, which is said to contain the spirit of the Korean people. These four representative mountains of Gangwon-do are also loved with precious cultural properties, temples, and rare animals and plants as well as a unique and beautiful view.

Hwanseongul, the largest limestone cave in Asia, is located at Samcheok, and the massive size of the cavern overwhelms visitors. Also, Gossi and Yongyeon Caves provide opportunities to explore a different view of the mountain that can’t be seen from the outside, since they penetrate into the middle of a large mountain. It is said that cave exploration is similar to time travel, or stepping into another dimension. Thus, visiting Cheongok Natural Cave presents a mysterious experience where the present seems to meet the past of 400~500 million years ago.
