Passport and Visa
Foreigners who would like to visit Korea should have a passport, and should get a visa before entering the country. However, people from the 99 countries that concluded a no-visa entry agreement with Korea can visit the country without a visa for a certain period of time.

Foreigner Registration

A Korean embassy or consulate can issue two types of visas: a short-term visa for visitors who wants to stay up to 90 days and a special long-term visa for periods longer than 90 days. A visitor with a special long-term visa is required to apply for alien registration at a local immigration office within 90 days of their arrival.

Customs

A written baggage declaration must be submitted to a customs officer upon entry. Passengers must clear customs through either green, white, or red channels. Passengers who have no articles to declare should use the green channel. If a passenger declares non-duty-free articles voluntarily, the declared amount will be accepted and the clearance procedure will be expedited.

Port of Donghae

In Gangwon-do, there is 1 international airport and 1 international port for foreign visitors.

Port of donghae
The Port of Donghae is mainly used to transport cement and limestone in and out of the country and it became famous in the world tourism industry by starting service of the Geumgangsan Ferry in 1998. As rear condition was formed such as the completion of 4-lane extension of Youngdong Express Highway etc., in 2001, it is expected that the freight transportation centering on Busan and Incheon Port at present would distribut to Donghae Port. In the future, Donghae Port which is located at the key part of Donghae rim will play a leading role in the North-South exchange, northward exchange and international maritime sightseeing.

Status of facility relating to Donghae Cruise

The Donghae Port is an “out-port” for the Geumgangsan Cruise promoted by Hyundai, and has maximum quay capacity of nine 50,000 ton level vessels. At present, Donghae Port has 2 vessel seats exclusive for Geumgangsan Cruise, a cruise terminal, various subsidiary facilities and functions required for cruise sightseeing such as feeding, watering, product supply and cleaning etc.
The passenger terminal, an iron-framed single-story building (approximately 840 PY) has convenient facilities such as a bank, stands, lounge, and photo studio etc., and 1,300 PY parking facility. 150,000 visitors a year use this facility.

Mt. Guemgangsan sightseeing

In other cases, a passport and visa are critical and may take a long time to obtain. Yet, in case of Geumgangsan sightseeing, visitors shall be given [a sightseeing certificate] as a visa on the day of departure and it acts as an ID card.
Therefore, if you have sightseeing certificate, no additional preparation for a visa is required.
However, for the certificate, you need an ID card in Korea. So, you must have a resident registration card, a driver’s license, or passport on the date of departure. In case of foreigners, you should submit a copy of your passport and have your passport with your date of departure.

In Gangwon-do, there is 1 international airport and 1 international port for foreign visitors.

Yangyang International Airport is located at Sonyang-myeon, Yangyang County, Gangwon-do, and it is the only international airport in the Yeongdong region. It serves as the gateway to sightseeing in Gangwon-do and is the stronghold airport of Yeongdong, which is a representative resort in Korea, and connects Sorak Mountain and the East Sea.

Special features As there are no mountains in the surrounding area,there is almost no fog due to the strong wind coming from the sea. It has played a role of an alternative airport to Sokcho airport, since it has a 30% cancellation rate and Gangneung Airport which has poor landing facilities. It has a control tower and has been promoting the establishment of a North-South direct line connected to Seondeok Airport (宣德空航), Hamgyeongnam-do, North Korea, according to the North-South transit protocol by KEDO.

Port of Sokcho

In Gangwon-do, there is 1 international airport and 1 international port for foreign visitors.

The Dongchun Ferry, which serves at Sokcho Port, established the “Baekdusan Route.” The world’s first sea-land connects Car-Ferry route and Sokcho and Hunchun, China via Zarubino and has been transporting passengers and container freights etc. Moreover, since 2003, it has extended its lane to Vladivostok Port, the capital of the maritime province of Russia. Cruise service to Japan and Singapore is available too.

Baekdusan Sightseeing

Baekdusan, the spirit mountain of Korea, is located at the border between North Korea and China. The ferry departs at Sokcho Port for sightseeing of Baekdusan as well as Goguryeo/Balhae remains of Manju and anti-Japan sites etc. The southeast of Baekdusan is North Korea and the Northwest is China. Since the course is Sokcho Port, Zarubino, Russia, Hunchun/Yanji, China, Baekdusan, a visa should be obtained for both China and Russia. For Chinese Visa, please inquire at the passenger department of Dongchun Ferry or the Chinese embassy, and for a Russian Visa, please apply to the Russian embassy in person. If you are Japanese, a visa is not required to enter China.
