Cheorwon marinated pork spareribs

food information

There is a unique must-try menu when visiting Cheorwon. It is the Cheorwon marinated pork spareribs. It is special because unlike the marinated pork spareribs of other regions, it is prepared together with horse radish. While some might think that spareribs and horse radish would not go together well, its unique taste is quite good and so many tourists to Cheorwon stop by for this. In addition, while some might assume that the horse radish in the marinated pork spareribs is Japanese wasabi, it is actually horse radish produced in Korea. It is even more special as the horse radish used is grown in Cheorwon.

Horse radish is often eaten with raw fish and sushi because its spicy flavor can cover unpleasant smell of food. It is also used in sauces that go with pork, beef and chicken. Horse radish can be consumed in full, not just its roots, but also the stems and leaves as well. The stems and leaves are pickled in soy sauce to be eaten as a side dish, or it can be eaten raw. Regardless of how it is eaten, it tastes great and when wrapped with meat, it gives a refreshing taste to the mouth.

While horse radish grows on land, its value increases when grown in water. It must be grown in flowing water and the water temperature cannot exceed 30 degrees in the summer and cannot fall below 10 degrees in the winter. Because of such difficult conditions, it used to be imported from Japan. However, the all-year-round constant water temperature at the ‘Saemtong Area’, which is within the Civilian Control Line at Dongsong-eup, Cheorwon-gun, made it possible to cultivate horse radish. Cheorwon marinated pork spareribs prepared using horse radish, which is a local product grown in Cheorwon, removes the unpleasant flavors of pork to offer clean tasting marinated pork spareribs.
