Gangwon-do is blessed with 4 clearly-divided seasons, which attract lots of tourists every year. With the 82% mountainous coverage and the 212km-long coastline, it holds the majority and vastness of mountains and sea as well as the mystery of various limestone caves, and is considered to be one of the best natural tourist spots in Korea.

Mountains make up most of Gangwon-do and there are lots of famous mountains that attract tourists. Several national and provincial parks are scattered around the well-known mountains in the area. In fact, these take up almost the entire area of Gangwon-do.

Soraksan is the mid point of a huge mountain range starting from Baekdusan to Tomal(土末; village name meaning ‘the end of the land’). This beautiful mountain is a favorite among Koreans and even foreigners pay it profuse compliments. Odaesan is the representative “feminine” mountain, and Chiaksan is famous as a rough and steep “manly” mountain. Also, Taebaeksan is a special mountain, which is said to contain the spirit of the Korean people. These four representative mountains of Gangwon-do are also loved with precious cultural properties, temples, and rare animals and plants as well as the unique and beautiful view.
