Korean administrative district consists of Special city, metropolitan city, Do, Si(City), Gun (county), Gu, Eup, Myeon, Dong, and Ri. Gangwon-do consists of 18 Si(City)?Gun(County). Si means the city having more than 50,000 population and Gun is smaller district than Si.

Location of cities and counties and basic information

Cheorwon-gun is situated in the northwestern part of Gangwon-do. This is the county that adjoins the 38th parallel to the north; and Gyeonggi-do, and Yeoncheon to the west. Cheorwon is well known for Cheorwon rice produced from Cheorwon rice field. Goseokjeong(pavillon) and Sambuyeon fall also exhibit beautiful scenery. Hwacheon-gun is located to the north of Chuncheon. It includes the famous lake, "Paroho". Many mountains in the region attract mountain climbers. Recently, a variety of new theme towns (concept towns) have been developed. Family tours for future tourists are also being planned at the moment. Chuncheon-si, once the capital city of "Maek", is the Mecca of academic learning and art which is beautifully harmonized with such splendid looking mountains as Bonguisan, and the gorgeous flowing water of Soyanggang. Since all the attention Chuncheon recently has received as a land of the future, Chuncheon, as a capital city of Gangwon-do, has not only become the starting place for a newly cultivated culture but also exhibits boundless potential. Yanggu-gun is situated in the north adjacent to the 38th parallel. This is the place where one can witness a well preserved unspoiled environment. Yanggu-gun has many security tightened tourist resorts such as Punchball district, 4th cave, and Ulji observatory. It is also famous for having many dolmens. Injae-gun is where the god's blessing, nature, and the myth of ancient times are well mingled. Injae is the cleanest area in this country, where the thickest primeval forest, deep valley, and clean blue water are well preserved. Goseong-gun is located in the northernmost area of Gangwon-do. Because of small number of visitors, this city boasts clean sea areas. The subsidiary facilities of the beaches are not well equipped yet; however, they are expected to be developed in the future since the land tour to Geumgangsan passes through the area. Needless to say, Sokcho-si is the best inland tourist attraction in Korea. It has access to outer Soraksan and well developed beaches. A great number of condominiums are concentrated in this region, thus, many people come to visit all year round. Yangyang is located between such big cities as Sokcho and Gangneung, so there are many beaches and plenty of inland tourist attractions. Naksan beach and Hajodae beach are the area’s representative beaches, and it has become increasingly popular as a summer resort because of the splendid looking Hangaeryeong and Guryongyeong Valleys. Hongcheon-gun is located in the center of Yeongseo in Gangwon-do. The clean Hongcheongang rises from Hongcheon-gun, and it boasts a well-kept primeval forest, unspoiled nature and the hospitality of local people. In terms of the area, it is the largest among the cities and counties in South Korea. Eighty-seven percent of the land is formed by mountainous terrain, and it is loved by many people for its unspoiled and clean tourist resorts. Furthermore, this is the hometown of the Korean patriot who started the supply of the rose of Sharon, the national flower; therefore, a great number of other cultural remains are still present. Gangneung-si has been an enriched historical city for many years, representing the Yeongdong region. Most of the Yeongdong culture originated from this city. Annually, such traditional festivals as Gangreung Dano Festival and other small and big festivals take place in May. Futhermore, Yeongdong highway nearby provides access to a day picnic. Pyeongchang is located on the western plateau. It preserves the natural beauty of the highland, and it is a popular place to visit because it is only 2 to 3 hours away from Seoul. There are ski resorts in Yongpyeong and Bongpyeong, so they are growing into popular cities for tourism. There are many pensions and interesting things to see here. Hoengseong-gun has received a tremendous amount of attention from people for its clean and beautiful environment. In the spring, mountains, blooming flowers, and trees welcome visitors; and the clean and pure mountain valleys capture visitor’s hearts in summer. Vivid and colorful leaves show off their figures in the fall and the white snowfield lure ski maniacs in winter. This is a topnotch county for tourism. Wonju-si represents the southern part of Gangwon-do. Chiaksan is nearby, and it attracts many mountain lovers, moreover, it is an important place for traffic and is the crossroads for the Yeongdong, and Jungang interstate highways. Yeongwol-gun, just like Taekaek-si, is located in the southernmost part of Gangwon-do. This city is also located up in the Plateau just like Pyeongchang and Jeongseon. Furthermore, Yeongwol still has many traces of the young king, Danjong, who had a tragic life there. Splendid natural beauties are hidden at all corners of the city. This is where the Donggang merges with the Seogang, forming the Namhangang. Jeongseon City represents the inland of Gangwon-do. The road system is not well developed yet, but the clean and beautiful environment is well preserved due to the small number of visitors. It is best known as a mining town, but now, it has been converted into a city of tourism. This city embraces Taebaeksan, the divine mountain of the Korean race. There are many more beautiful places besides Taebaeksan in the city, because of the geographical location of the entire city, which is up on a Plateau. Taebaeksan snow festival, which is held every winter, has become a local representative festival that attracts many tourists. Samcheok is located southernmost on the east coast of Gangwon-do. Although this city is only an hour away from Gangnung, not as many people come to visit. However, the coastline of Samchuk is viewed as the most beautiful coastline in Gangwon-do. Mureung valley shows off the highest standard of natural beauty. Moreover, Samcheok posseses a great deal of other tourist attractions. Donghae-Si, which is located in the south of Gangwon-do, is still better known as "Mookho," the previous city name. Danghae-si also has many beaches of various sizes, especially, Chuam beach. It is a famous place to watch sun rise and to see the stretch of rocks along the beach. Moreover, cruise ships to Geumgangsan depart from the port of Danghae.
