The most prevalent types of accommodations in Korea are motels and yeogwans. There are many motels and yeogwans near the bus terminals and train stations in large cities. They are not only easy to access, but they are also inexpensive. Reservations are not required unless it is peak season or a holiday. Because of the cheap price and easy accessibility, the conditions are not always pleasant.
These accommodations usually offer ondol rooms (heated floors with cushioned mats to sleep on) so if you want a western-style room (with a bed) it is a good idea to check beforehand.
The prices vary depending on location and facilities. Generally, the cost is about 25,000-50,000 won; however prices may be significantly higher during peak season or holidays.
* Korea`s Peak Seasons: April-May, July-August, October-November. During the winter, the motels and yeogwans around ski resorts are usually filled.
Condominiums are apartment-style lodgings that provide convenience and comfort because of their private cooking facilities and seminar rooms, swimming pools, recreational facilities and nearby restaurants and supermarkets. They are usually located near ski resorts, famous mountains, parks, and beaches; they are also very large in scale. Although condominiums are exclusively rented to members during peak seasons, they can be rented to nonmembers during off-peak times. The cost differs significantly according to the facilities, but it typically costs around 30,000 to 100,000 won per night. However, there are luxurious condominiums that can cost 200,000 or more per night.
Pensions are a new type of lodgings that have recently appeared in Korea. Pensions are usually located in tourist areas filled with natural scenery and landscapes. They are European-style villas or cottages and provide an excellent place for rest and recreation in a natural setting. There are many forms of pensions, from high-class villas to simple log cabins. They are becoming extremely popular with couples and families.
Mountain huts and shelters (called 'Daepiso') are excellent lodgings for hikers in Korea's national parks. Daepisos are not luxurious and provide only the basic necessities in life such as neat beds, light meals and clean drinking and bathing water. During the summer hiking season and fall season (when the foliage changes colours), these lodgings are very crowded. Also, from February to May and from November 15 to December 15, mountain huts and shelters are closed to the public, to prevent wild fires.
Another type of lodging for families and groups is a log cabin, which are plentiful at recreational forests and amusement parks. Log cabins are fully furnished with convenient amenities and services. The cost per night at a log cabin is about 40-50,000 won for a family of four.
Campfires on individual campsites are prohibited so many campgrounds have specific campfire sites and cooking facilities.
Auto camping is a combination of the words “automobile” and “camping,” meaning leisure activities to enjoy car tripping and camping.
In Korea, the unique Mangsang Auto Camping Field has balanced convenience facilities such as caravans, cabin houses (oak houses), American cottages (wooden row houses) etc.
To enjoy auto camping, it is recommended to rent a 4~6 seat motor caravan equipped with lodging, cooking, and washing-up facilities or a trailer-type caravan that is connected to your vehicle.
