Hanji (Korean Paper) Cultural festival promotes Korean Paper, which is folk culture asset of Wonju, Gangwon-do. Yeongwol is the place where the spirit of Gimsatgat sleeps in. His real name is Byeong-Yeon, and pen name is Nango. He was a wandering poet wearing bamboo hat during his whole life after leaving home since he had committed unforgiven sin at the composition contest by accusing of his grandfather. Every mid-October memorial service, memorial Salpuri dance, memorial performances, and composition contests are held to light up his life and world of poem. Memorial monument and street as well as his dwelling site and tomb have been attractions. Mountain stream flowing from Taebaek mountain range, which was called ‘Mureung-gye’ by Gimsatgat, is now called ‘Gimsatgat Valley.’
Gasan Hyo suk Lee is a reputable authority of Korean contemporary literature. One of his main literary works "when buckwheat flower blooms" was actually based on the story which took place here in Bongpyeong. Starting late summer, the town begins to be covered by buckwheat flowers, and that is when Hyeoseok cultural festival starts. All sorts of local dishes such as buckwheat Makguksu, buckwheat pancake, buckwheat Mook(jello-like) can be tasted in the festival. In the midst of Hyeoseok cultural festival, the traditional market which is recreated from his novel, can be spotted. so, How about heading out to Pyeongchang in the fall when the picturesque buckwheat flowers cover the entire town.
